Are your summer plans filled with camping, fishing, boating on the lakes, and hiking with your friends and family?
Do you want to travel up North to the cabins, and to get time away from Edina?
And are you worried that chronic pain is going to spoil your fun – just like it did last year?!
If so, there is still time to fix your injuries, aches, and pains, and in this blog, you can discover the most common mistakes people make when trying to end their chronic pain.
The True Impact Of Chronic Pain On Your Life
Chronic pain can make it really difficult to enjoy your summer – getting the car packed up, driving for several hours, and then unpacking it all once you’ve arrived and after your back, knee or neck is in agony, and feels tight and stiff.
This is just one scenario where chronic pain leaves you annoyed, frustrated, and unable to enjoy yourself.
How much better would traveling up North be without chronic pain?
You can laugh and joke with your partner.
You can stop off on the way for a quick adventure with your grandkids.
You can sing your heart out to your favorite songs on the radio.
All because you aren’t in pain, distracted, and worrying about chronic pain getting worse as the day goes on.
Common Mistakes People Make When Trying To End Their Chronic Pain
Everyone’s chronic pain is unique to them.
But there are some common mistakes I’ve seen over the many years of treating patients in my Edina clinic, which lead to MORE pain, MORE suffering, and leave people feeling helpless.
Mistake 1 – You Accepted That Chronic Pain Is Normal, Part Of Aging Or It’s Unavoidable Because It Runs In Your Family
In society, a lot of people have simply accepted pain as a part of life.
And friends, family, and colleagues will often tell you that you’re lucky that you can still do what you’re limited to.
Whether the argument is that pain as you age is inevitable.
Or that because your parents had health problems, you are destined to suffer the same fate.
It’s not TRUE.
And you shouldn’t give up trying to find solutions to your chronic pain if you want to be able to enjoy action-packed summers again.
Mistake 2 – You Followed Your Doctors Advice Of Rest, Pills, And Wishful Thinking
People often visit my clinic after years of suffering from chronic pain, and a common story is that they’ve visited their doctor after the pain didn’t go away.
However, when visiting your doctor – who is often a generalist – my patients tell me that they appear to typically resort to the standard advice of rest, pills, and wishful thinking.
But this very rarely works in the long term.
Pills simply numb you to the pain, without actually addressing the root cause, so it keeps coming back.
Rest may work in the short term, but as soon as you return to your normal activities, the pain quickly returns.
And finally, wishful thinking is exactly that.
Hoping, and I don’t know about you, but hoping for the best is a very poor strategy – especially when it involves something as important as your health.
Mistake 3 – You Tried Exercises And Stretches At Home Without Any Real Understanding Of The True Cause Of Your Chronic Pain
The final mistake I hear when people try to cure their aches, pains, and injuries is turning to Google or worse social media.
There is a vast amount of information online, and a lot of it is inaccurate or misleading and comes from people who have limited experience, and no qualifications.
I’ve been qualified as a Physical Therapist since 1988, and have worked with thousands of people treating all kinds of conditions and injuries.
But even if you’re lucky enough to find some genuinely valuable advice, how do you know that it’s relevant to your specific chronic pain?
What I mean is, your chronic back pain could be caused by a problem in your foot, which is impacting you further up your body through your knee, hips, and into your lower back.
So endlessly stretching your back, or strengthening your core, would never address the root cause of your back pain.
And this is where lots of people find themselves.
Blindly guessing, and spending a lot of time, energy, and money on things that are never going to work.
So How Can You Cure Your Chronic Pain For Summer?
If you’re making one (or all three) of these mistakes that stop you from ending your chronic pain, then I appreciate you may be feeling hopeless, annoyed, and confused.
